Zirconia, or zirconium dioxide, is an exceptionally high strength ceramic material derived from the naturally occurring silicate mineral, zircon. Usually, we associate ceramics with tableware such as plates and mugs, but ceramics have also been in use in dentistry for decades.

Zirconia in particular has a long history of use in medical care due to its high strength and biocompatibility. It has commonly been used in medical applications that include artificial joints and bone implants.
